Think Tank and Chess
The school has built up a formidable reputation as a centre for excellence in thinking skills and chess. Pupils are taught strategic thinking skills and emotional intelligence from Reception using Think Tank (formerly Mind Lab) – an innovative and exciting programme which runs as part of the curriculum each week. Our pupils are taught by fully trained staff and skills learnt are further developed by additional extra-curricular activities including an annual Mind Sports Olympiad held at the school and involving a large number of our pupils.
Twickenham Prep’s success in this area is well documented not least because the school has won the National Mind Lab Olympics for the past five years. This significant achievement has enabled TPS to compete in the International Mind Lab Olympics for the last five years, representing England in Romania, Greece, Turkey, Switzerland and Hungary. The school is proud to have won an individual bronze, silver and gold in the International Olympics – being the first school from the UK to have won an individual gold medal.
Excellence is not restricted to Thinking Skills as the school has competed at a national level for many years in chess. There are many opportunities to develop chess skills at the school with a variety of clubs and activities being held every week and many pupils competing in individual and school tournaments. This year, Twickenham Prep not only reached the National English Chess Federation Schools Finals but also won the Independent Prep Schools National Title at both U13 and U11 with a TPS pupil winning the individual IAPS tournament outright – a tremendous achievement.
