Headmaster’s Update
This week has been an important one for our senior pupils, with the summer exams taking place for children from Year 4 up to Year 8. The school has radiated a real sense of purposeful endeavour (even more so than usual!) and it’s been a great chance for the children to demonstrate all their learning from across the year and to help develop the right mindset for success. Well done to all of the children for working so hard; they’ve certainly earned a half term break! Aside from the examinations this week, I was delighted to see that a number of our children took part in exciting events this week, with Year 5 and 6 teams taking part in the Quiz Club Mathematics Competition with Mrs Clough on Tuesday, answering some challenging questions under tight time pressure, competing against another 70 teams from across the nation. A further 15 children from Year 5 headed to Epsom College on Wednesday with Mrs Mills to explore the possibilities of life existing on the fictional planets of Hoth and Tatooine of Star Wars fame – great fun!
I’d like to share some news from the previous week: last Sunday saw 7 girls and boys compete at the IAPS National Triathlon Championships in Bath at Monkton Coombe. The children were superb, all completing the challenging course and recording very good overall times. Well done to Tabitha, Milo, Jonah, Freddie, Agnes and Julian for showing TPS ‘Courage’ and special mention to Tom in Year 7 who finished in 5th place in the U12 category – an outstanding achievement. In addition, we’ve had some superb results announced from the high-level Junior Maths Challenge for our senior boys too, with Toby and Jasper O achieving a Bronze; Sebastian KP, Asher, Alex H, Ned, Evan, Rishi and Jasper D achieving a Silver and Oscar H, Advik, Sebastian B, Chester, Jasper M, Aryan, Tim, Eamon and Harry all celebrated as Gold winners. I gather the top performers now qualify for the Kangaroo round!
In Pre-Prep, focus this week has been centred on the spectacular, with preparations taking place for Mrs Hill’s Circus-themed Summer Concert, performed yesterday to an enthralled audience. Those of us lucky enough to be present were regaled with songs capturing the magic of the circus performers, with instrumental accompaniment, narration explaining the terminology and origins of the circus and even performance poetry from each of the classes. It was a wonderful celebration and Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are clearly filled with performing stars. Today, we brought the half term to a close with our Year 2 Grandparents’ Day, and it was a treat to see the children sharing their school experience with family, taking time to look through their work and explore the Pre-Prep spaces together before a mini celebration; we hope our very special guests feel truly part of the TPS family.
