This week:

    Headmaster’s Update

It’s been a busy and productive final week of the half term and so wonderful to finish in a blaze of sunshine.  The Prep school has certainly been a little quieter than usual, given that the children have undertaken a host of end of year assessments, a key aspect of the teaching and learning cycle. Well done to all the children for their endeavours, working hard to prepare and revise with the well-earned break next week surely rich reward.

Looking back to last weekend, I had the pleasure of supporting our team entered in the IAPS National Triathlon Championships near Bath at Monkton Prep School on Sunday, with competitors from across the country taking part. For TPS, we had 5 children on the start line: Isaac, Sami, Eleanor, Ethan and Tom. All showed huge determination and skill to complete the task of swimming, cycling and running, when tackling a very challenging course. In the U10 boys’ category, Ethan managed a very creditable 6th place and in the U13 boys’ race Tom finished in 5th place. I am also delighted to report that Eleanor finished 3rd overall in the U10 girls’ category, receiving a very special trophy in recognition of her national success. Well done everyone!

You’ll be aware of our ongoing focus on the environment in recent weeks and Pre-Prep have continued in earnest by celebrating World Bee Day. The children shared lots of ideas about bee conservation and learnt about promoting healthy populations and the wonder of these amazing insects. The children found out about the importance of planting purple and blue flowers in the garden; putting stones in a birdbath so bees can rest and access the water and how to choose bee-friendly pollinator plants. Perhaps a chance to do some planting over half term?

Of course, the younger children further demonstrated their environmental credentials in our wonderful Summer Music Concert, ‘Our Wonderful World’, yesterday afternoon which was a joy to behold. Each year group performed songs and poems, from Reception’s ‘Use it Again’, urging us to re-cycle to Year 1’s ‘The Walking Song’, filled with messages about environmentally friendly travel and, finally, Year 2’s poems, ‘Care for Our World’ and ‘One Earth One Change’, which spoke powerfully of our need to protect our planet.  It was a fantastic celebration which Sir David Attenborough would have been very proud to witness!

Wishing everyone a very enjoyable and sunny half term break.

    Oliver Barrett, Headmaster
