This week:

    Headmaster’s Update

Rightly so, there is a national conversation taking place over the declining mental health of young people and all schools are expected to ensure that wellbeing is at the centre of their provision. We want TPS to be the children’s ‘Happy Place’ and fittingly, on Wednesday we were treated to a truly wonderful assembly by Year 1, exploring emotional literacy and how talking about our feelings and thinking about the sorts of activities that make us feel energised and positive are really important; the children were ‘feelings detectives’ and regaled us with top tips, catchy songs and even a little bit of magic to reveal how colours can be directly associated with feelings.  It was great to see that the Roger Hargreaves, ‘Little Miss’ and ‘Mr Men’ books are still in vogue!

Year 1 would certainly have approved of the fact that we had two outdoor education trips take place this week, full of fun and learning. Year 2 made the short journey to Painshill Park in Cobham to undertake floral art activities and build dens. Venturing further, Year 3 went on their first residential trip, staying overnight at the Marchants Hill PGL (Parents Get Lost) Centre near Hindhead to take on a host of physical and team work challenges. By all accounts, they had a wonderful time and today’s Celebration Assembly revealed a very strong consensus that the ‘Giant Swing’ was the highlight!  Often these trips are the most memorable and special experiences for the children and help develop independence, leadership and collaboration whilst also encouraging the children to take risks.

At school, we’ve enjoyed special learning opportunities all thanks to the generosity and expertise of members of the TPS community. Tuesday saw a special talk by Sofija Dubianskaja, Rehoming & Welfare Coordinator at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, who explored animal behaviour and pet care with the senior pupils, which they very much enjoyed. That same day, the senior boys tuned in to their creative sides, with the opportunity to work with artist and TPS parent Nadia Day to produce stunning acrylic paintings of Bushy Park. Looking forwards, we are also really excited that in mid-June we will be holding our inaugural Arts Week, allowing a special focus on the more creative areas of learning at TPS. Watch this space!
