Headmaster’s Update
Happy Arts Week!
We’ve been showcasing so much amazing learning this week at TPS in our inaugural celebration of the more creative endeavours. In music, the children have taken part in strings and djembe drumming workshops, whilst drama activities have seen the children exploring Shakespeare in the plays, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘Macbeth’, hopefully now duly inspired by the Bard’s extraordinary use of language: ‘Something wicked this way comes…’ We have been privileged to receive visits from some very talented guests, including Eileen Browne, illustrator of the vibrant picture book classic, ‘Handa’s Surprise’, and Liz Wilson, an award-winning artist, who explored print-making and book binding with the Prep pupils. Only yesterday, we hosted King Kimba, a performance poet and rapper, who talked about freedom of expression and his top tips through the acronym ‘SHAMPOO’ which neatly encapsulates 7 key ingredients of figurative language, with ‘S’ standing for ‘simile’; ‘H’ standing for ‘hyperbole’; I wonder if you can work out the rest? Kimba’s energy, humour and talent certainly inspired the children to write and perform some fantastic pieces of their own. We are all hugely indebted to the staff who have overseen this hugely successful and inspiring week, including Mrs Hill (Music), Mrs Freeman (Art) and Mrs Kidson (English). Our Arts Week spectacular will conclude with a special exhibition in the Studio on Saturday 14th June, from 1.00–3.00pm, as part of our Summer Fair, so please do pop in to the Peter Jenkinson Building (Music) if you and your family are visiting tomorrow.
Aside from Arts Week, we’ve continued our series of leavers’ assemblies to mark the significant milestone of a number of children in our Year 6 and Year 8 cohorts saying farewell to TPS in early July. This week saw Mrs Clough’s form explore the school values (6C with the 4Cs!), sharing some very clever sketches to demonstrate why we believe we should all strive to be ‘calm’, ‘courteous’, ‘considerate’ and ‘courageous’. The collective audience were wowed with the children’s confidence and poise on stage in delivering their retrospective take on school life, all the more so given that the whole assembly was entirely written, directed and performed by the children. Well done, indeed!
Finally, it was wonderful to see so many fathers and male carers joining us for the Fathers’ Day Breakfast BBQ this morning in the balmy June sunshine – what better way to start a Friday? It is very important for us to welcome TPS families to events like this at school and we hope that this gesture shows just how much the children and staff appreciate all the things you do. Dads are truly fab!
